Kohima, March 26 (MExN): A year after being tagged as the second most unlivable city in India, Kohima is ready to make amends, become one of India’s model capital cities, and lead the global fight against Plastic Pollution. The transformation of Kohima has begun with the launch of the Smart City Project, and soon, Kohima will be a smart city occupied by smart people. The citizens of Kohima have come together to say ‘No to Plastic’ and adopt a plastic-free lifestyle.
According to a DIPR report, in what can be described as a momentous occasion in the fight against Plastic pollution, the citizens of Kohima, represented by various NGOs and plastic-free leaders, along with the State Government and District Administration, decided to put a total ban on single-use Plastic products in the State Capital in a joint meeting held on March 26 at AMK Conference Hall Kohima.
In his opening remark, Abhishek Singh IAS, Principal Secretary & Chairman of the State Empowered Committee, singled-use Waste Management in Nagaland, highlighted the menace of plastics and their destruction to our environment. He said that the problem of plastic waste had been a pressing concern for all; the most important aspect of creating a plastic-free climate is ensuring that the community realizes the need to safeguard the environment, not just for the present generation but also for the future generations.” Plastplastic-free be blamed. Several important topics relating to implementing the plastic ban were discussed during the joint meeting, wherein priority was given to educating and sensitizing the general public on the environmental damage that plastics cause. Representatives from the business community also shed light on the more practical aspects of the ban and the feasibility of the project. The gathering also discussed the prohibition on plastics as an opportunity for upcoming local entrepreneurs who can supply alternative biodegradable replacements for the banned single-use plastic products.
